Baked Ham and Swiss Sliders


If you’ve followed me for long enough, you’ll know that I’m a very sentimental person, full of precious memories, and thriving on the sweet attachments I share with my loved ones. Many, many of my recipes fall under the wing of my sentimentality, memories of particular dishes being prepared by my favorite people. It’s truly what makes me love food as much as I do- not just the delicious taste and pleasure of eating, but the love and fondness that are so often wrapped up in any particular scent, flavor, or appearance of a dish. I love that.

This isn’t one of those recipes.

I just spent half an hour on the phone with my mom laughing because I had nothing to say about these sandwiches except that they are delicious, I love them, my family loves them, and I make them all the time. The unglamorous story behind them is that I saw a recipe for these online about ten years ago, loved them, made them over and over again, tweaking here and there to make them my own. They are now part of our regular meal repertoire, and they’re truly scrumptious. They’re fabulous for parties, for luncheons, or, pair them with a leafy salad, and you’ve got yourself a very tasty dinner. My history with these sliders may be boring and typical, but the taste of them is anything but!


1 package Hawaiian sweet rolls (the standard sized package, 12 rolls)

1/2 c. butter, melted

2 T. yellow mustard

1.5 T. Worcestershire sauce

3 T. brown sugar

1/2 tsp. garlic powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. ground pepper

9-12 oz. package sliced ham (a standard sized package)

6 slices Swiss cheese


Combine all ingredients except rolls, ham, and cheese in medium sized bowl, stir to combine

*Note: If you would prefer to use a spicy brown mustard in lieu of yellow, that is also delicious. I actually made these that way for years. Until one day, we were out of spicy brown mustard and I used yellow in a pinch. I found I actually liked the zing it gave a bit more, and have continued to use yellow instead ever since.

Remove rolls from package and slice down the center using a serrated knife. You will end up with two slabs, a top and a bottom


Place bottom half of rolls into a greased dish. Brush on a light layer of the butter mixture

Top bottom rolls with ham, then cheese

Place top layer of rolls over cheese, and pour butter mixture over the top, spreading with a spatula so that they are evenly covered

Cover with foil and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or, up to 8 hours)

Bake, covered with foil, at 350 for 30 minutes

After 30 minutes, remove foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes until tops are golden brown

Let rest at least 5 minutes before serving
